FAQ
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Home Assistant runs in your home; lights, automations and local sensors keep working. Only remote access waits for the internet to come back.
Do I need to buy all new devices?
No. Home Assistant supports thousands of products. We start with what you have and only recommend replacing things where it is worth it.
Do you install in-wall switches and 240 V thermostats?
I do wireless, battery, plug-in and low-voltage installs. Anything on 120/240 V goes to a licensed partner master electrician (CMEQ member). See electrical work.
Who owns the system?
You do. The server, devices, accounts and backups are yours. No vendor lock-in.
I’m on Hilo. Does it work together?
Yes. Home Assistant reads your Hilo challenges and can add devices Hilo does not control to the effort. Hilo subscribers earned $205 in rewards on average in winter 2024–2025 (Hydro-Québec data); the reward format may change, so check Hilo’s current terms. The Home Assistant integration is a community project, not an official one.
